It is his life and his livelihood as a music teacher. So when doctors discovered a tumor located in the part of his brain responsible for music function, he became immediately worried that it might be cancerous. Fortunately for Dan the tumor turned out to be benign. He was working on a master's degree in music education but he could no longer hear the vastness of the music that loves so much. Dan was told that the tumor was located in a part of the brain known to be active when people listen to and make music. Dan’s talent as a musician extended so remarkably far that when he brushed his teeth with an electric toothbrush, he would hear melodies that harmonized with the humming sound from the toothbrush. These melodies went away with the development of his tumor. Dan told reporters that, instead, he would see and hear things that were not real. Dr. Web Pilcher, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Brad Mahon, a cognitive neuroscientist, together developed a brain mapping program. Mahon contacted Elizabeth Marvin, Ph.D., a professor of Music Theory in the University of Rochester's Eastman School of Music. Marvin also holds a position in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and studies music cognition -- the ability of our brains to remember and process music. The two developed a series of cognitive musical tests that Fabbio could perform while the researchers were scanning his brain. Before operating on Dan, the doctors’ first task was to learn as much as possible about his life and the how his brain works. They felt that this was necessary in order to minimize damage to his brain. Fabbio was not only awake, but he once again performed the music and language tests, this time with his brain exposed. One day, about a month after his brain surgery, Fabbio was brushing his teeth and suddenly, the harmonies returned. He has completely recovered. http://fortune.com/2017/08/24/kfc-virtual-reality-chicken/ KFC is tapping virtual reality to improve its employees’ chicken frying skills. The fast food chain said Thursday that it’s debuting an employee-training program in which chefs learn to cook a batch of the company’s signature fried chicken inside a virtual kitchen. The training program was designed to resemble a game in which participants complete the five steps required to make fried chicken in a style to KFC’s liking. This includes inspecting, rinsing, breading, racking, and then pressure frying virtual chickens. KFC said that it takes about 25 minutes for employees to fry chicken, but the virtual reality program only takes 10 minutes to complete. A KFC spokesperson said in an email that, "The VR isn’t meant to speed up the process, it is to teach cooks how to make the world-famous Original Recipe fried chicken." The game was developed by the technology group of ad agency It’s unclear just how big of a roll out KFC is planning for its VR training game, which could be a marketing stunt to generate publicity for KFC, considering that an advertising firm built the VR program. Food site Eater noted that KFC has recently tried other publicity stunts including a takeout box that also charges phones and a bucket for holding chicken that also functions as a Bluetooth photo printer. https://consumerist.com/2017/08/28/man-racked-up-thousands-of-dollars-in-charges-at-hotels-without-ever-checking-in/ http://akramdaily.com/index.php/2017/08/29/horse-kicks-breaks-leg-man-trying-sexually-assault/ http://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2017/08/25/545710598/this-music-teacher-played-his-saxophone-while-in-brain-surgery
